ECB has appointed South African Steve Elworthy as the tournament director of the 2009 edition of ICC World Twenty20 cup scheduled to be held in England. He held the same post for the Last edition held in south Africa earlier this year. ECB chief executive David colier feels that Elworthy would be an ideal candidate for the job as he has the experience of the job as well as the location as Elworthy has played plenty of county cricket in England.

Speaking to the news sources Elworthy told that it is a honour to be nominated to run the event in 2009. He said it’s a honour as well as a challenge and he is relishing it. He told the 2007 edition was a festival of world class cricket and he hope that the next edition would be even grander than it. India won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 Tournament 2007 in South Africa beating the Pakistanis in a scintillating final.

The New Zealand all rounder Chris Cairns feels that the Indian Cricket League (ICL) would be a huge hit. He said even when the BCCI’s league the Indian Premier League (IPL) has more stars from the active circuit the ICL has good mix of brilliant stars from the past as well as young local talent. Cairns wasn’t happy about the way the media is projecting the ICL as a rebel league; He insisted that since the players aren’t contracted to any boards they cant be billed as rebels, ICL is just another opportunity to play cricket like any other.

Cairns said that the Twenty20 Cricket (T20) format in which the league is being played is very appealing and it would be interesting to find for him how he is faring against the young Indian talent.

The Indian Cricket League (ICL) has gone one step further and introduced an Indian system of calculating the target in interrupted matches instead of the dreaded Duckworth-Lewis method. The VJD stands for the name of its inventor the Kerala-based engineer V JayaDevan. The 44 year old has put up a system after studying the patterns of the past matches. He calims that his method is superior than the exisiting DL method. The VJD system is based on a mathematical model of the natural development of an innings through its various stages of settling down, making use of field restrictions, mid stages of stabilising, acceleration towards the end and the final ’slog’ overs.

Based on the general scoring pattern and research of past matches, a ‘normal’ statistical curve has been developed. Regression analysis was carried out using ’spread sheet’ software and a cubical polynomial equation was used for determining the scoring pattern.

Putting all this into use, Jayadevan has generated a ‘target curve’. He also provides a ‘target table’ where the revised target can be computed depending on the percentage of total overs that were completed for different percentages of wickets. To make the entire process easy, a computer programme has been devised.

The work on the VJD System was started in 1998 and got a proper shape in 2001. Jayadevan’s system will come under closer scrutiny from the ICC before a decision is made on whether to deploy it internationally in place of the DL method.
With its inclusion in the ICL the VJD system got its shot in the arm. Renowned Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has commended the job done by Jayadevan. As usual the BCCI is taking a closer look at the system now even when it is lying in its back yard for more than five years waiting for some one to back its credentials.

On the wake of BCCI’s comments on foreign players deflecting from Indian Cricket League to Join its brand of Twenty20 cricket Legaue the Indian Premier League, Essel group’s executive vice-president Ashish kaul said that the BCCI is stooping too low.

He was quoted by PTI as saying “We were expecting it. The BCCI can stoop low and do this. They tried to do it earlier as well by spreading rumours that Lara was planning to join them. However, you can see he has arrived here and will be playing,”
He said the BCCI is blowing up millions of rupees in public money on IPL, the board should instead concentrate on improving the state of affairs in domestic circuit. “Contrary to our aim of promoting domestic cricket by giving cricketers at that level opportunities and allowing them to play with international players, IPL will be using public money to pay big international stars. Why don’t they spend this money on Ranji Trophy or CK Naidu Trophy or other domestic events,” he added.

He said the ICL is doing the right thing and the BCCI has indirectly acknowledged the fact by offering money to cricketers to woo them to come back to its camp. He told that the board has failed to administer cricket in this country with transparency and now it is using every tactic to create hurdles to ICL.

In an effort to lure the advertisers the Zee group has decided to telelcast the beginning 30 minutes of every macth of the Indian Cricke League’s (ICL) inagural season on all its 25 channels within India and its 7 Internationl feeds, accoring to sources.

Talking to the media persons the executive vice-president of Essel group Mr.Ashish Kaul termed it as a first-of-a-kind move to enable ICL matches to be viewed in over 125 countries. He said “It has never been done before. The first 30-minutes of two matches, that would be played each day from November 30 to December 16, will be available live on all our network channels so that they can be sampled by almost everyone.”

The Zee network of 25 channels has a reach of about 100 million cable and satellite and direct-to-home subscribers. Outside India, the Zee bouquet of channels, through seven feeds, reaches Europe, North America, Africa, Australia among other countries.

Zee didn’t give any surity to the advertisers about the telecast of ICL on Ten Sports a channel where Zee is an equal partner to the Taj group. Zee Sports has a very limited distribution in homes (only 20% of the cable homes) unlike Ten Sports which is available in 70% of the cable homes, this made the advertisers not to commit to the ICL.

With just 2 days to go Zee has its work cut out.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set the floor price for the Broadcast rights bids for its Twenty20 cricket league the Indian Premier League (IPL) at 59 million Dollars per year. This is just the floor price so one can only imagine what could be the final price. The bids are expected to be revealed in the month of December.

BCCI Vice-President Lalit Modi confirmed the figure, adding the tender document will be made available in a few days after some modifications are made. He further added “Broadcasters have the choice of bidding for a five or ten-year period,”.

ESPN STAR Sports, Sony Entertainment Television and Nimbus Communications have expressed interest in acquiring the rights for IPL. The IPL will have 56 matches that will be played by eight teams.

Former Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu said that the Indian Cricket League (ICL) should be looked upon as an employment opportunity rather than a challenge to the existing set-up. He said that boards around the world should not bar players from earning a living through the Indian Cricket League(ICL).

“I don’t think ICL should be blocked in any way. In fact, we need more such initiatives to groom talent. It should be treated as a career chosen by a cricketer. They (the boards) are not doing any good by putting sanctions,” told Atapattu.

Atapattu will be Leading the Delhi Jets team, in the six team Twenty20 format league scheduled to start on 30th November. Talking about the BCCI’s version of Twenty20 League the Indian Premier League (IPL), “IPL has dragged in all the current players but ICL also has fresh talent on display. That is where the difference lies.”
